Every year since National Health IT Week convened on Capitol Hill in 2005, the importance of healthcare automation to improve provider efficiency and patient outcomes has been gaining momentum.  This week’s gathering provides a critical opportunity to fine tune the goals of meaningful use following the recent healthcare IT funding as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).
 

Docs: e-Rx alerts more annoying than helpful

A recent study finds clinicians often override the built-in medication alerts in e-prescribing systems, relying instead on their own judgment. The study, led by investigators at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, suggests clinicians find the alerts to be more annoying than helpful, and significant improvements are needed in order for e-prescribing systems to be used more effectively.
